A theoretical approach to the notion of significate and to existing models for the analysis of prepositions argues for a polysemous reading of auf as preposition or particle. Our study demonstrates the inadequacy of both the localist model and the theory of preposition bleaching, arguing that both the spatial interpretation and the bleaching phenomenon can be accounted for by the syntactic function and the semantic environment of the preposition-particle. Spatial and abstract uses can be dealt with homogeneously within the theoretical frameworks of incidence (G. Guillaume, G. Moignet, J. Cervoni) and inference (P.
